    What this session will cover

The 9th Annual GAR Live London conference will focus on ‘Arbitration and its place in the world order’, with two panels considering different angles on that theme.

    The programme

    14.00: Welcome coffee and registration
    14.15: Chairs’ opening remarks
    14.20: Keynote address
14.50: Session one: The GAR Live debate

In Oxford Union style, we will hear teams of debaters argue in favour of, or against, a motion. A panel of judges will then voice opinions on what has been heard, before choosing which side to support and giving reasons for their decisions.

Motion: “This House believes that an increasingly populist world is bad for arbitration”

    15.20: Coffee break
15.50: Session two: Will International Arbitration lose to China’s “International Courts” in the race to capture Belt & Road disputes?

As the pace increases in the race to capture Belt & Road initiative disputes, our panel of arbitrations and counsel will discuss arbitration’s ability to keep up with the challenge posed by China’s “international courts”. Can arbitration remain an attractive option in settling disputes? Is arbitration vulnerable to losses in the face of China’s changing system?

    17.35: Chairs’ closing remarks
    17.40: Close of conference

The session will be chaired by Paul Friedland, White & Case, and Karyl Nairn, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. Other speakers include: Judith Gill QC, 20 Essex Street, Yasmin Mohammad, Vannin Capital, and Audley Sheppard QC, Clifford Chance.
